We are doing our flags and our flags look fantastic.  They are kiwiana flags.  They have buzy bees, silver ferns, L&P bottles, and other kiwiana things.  Our flag poles are really colourful. We also went and looked at the school's flag pole.   We are going to finish our flags next week and test them out in the wind.  Kim has sent an email to John Key so that he can see our flags when they are on our blogsite.  He hasn't replied yet.

GO BLUE DAY

Today we all dressed up in blue and brought money to school, for the kids who have problems with their heart.  If you don't get enough oxygen your heart can't pump blood properly and you go blue!  Everyone looked awesome!

Cross Country 2009

It was a wet day but then it got sunnier and when we had the race it wasn't so muddy, and it was grippy. I tried my fastest so I could win and I came first on all the laps. It was fun standing on the podium when they gave me the badges and the certificates.

The Impossible Bridge

The RED reading group worked with Phil and read The Impossible Bridge.  Then they tried to make their own impossible bridges out of A4 paper.  It was amazing how a simple structure could hold such heavy things!  Well done Red group!  Here are a couple of podcasts about making the bridges.

Tubby the Tuba comes to Clifton Terrace

Yesterday we went to an orchestra. My favourite instrument was the violin. I liked how it could go ferociously and also play sad music. One of the other instruments could play sad music aswell. That was the oboe. The instruments were made out of plasticine and the real ones were made out of metal and wood. The plasticine ones were kind of squishy but I didn't get to hold one. Maya got to hold one and she was the only one who knew the trombone's name. The tuba had a very light sound and the plasticine one could take it's mouth off and make it have a smiley face and a sad face.

Want to know more about kiwiana?

Here is a link to a kiwiana site.  There is lots of information, and a you tube clip about all things Kiwiana.  Great to watch the different images.  Click here to see it.
What a great country we live in!

Science on Fridays - WOW!

People Shapes!

On Wednesday we made shapes with people.  Some were love hearts, diamonds, and squares, and I think some were triangles.  It was hard because you had to curve around on the love heart bits and the edges.  The edges were hard because they were pointy.

Cross Country training continues....

Cross country training is fun because you can run through bushes and up hill and down hill.  I go round once and it is easy.  5 and 6 year olds go round once.  7 and 8 year olds go round 2 times and the others go round 3 times.

Performing Plays

This week we have been doing plays in our reading groups.  And we were making things for the play like masks, food, bone.  Our play was called Hen’s Egg Cow’s Milk.  It was good and we read it to the class.  All the groups did a play.  My favourite one was when the  Blue groups play people were watching TV and the robbers came and stole it!

Isosceles Triangles

We have been learning about ISOSCELES TRIANGLES.  We know that they have 2 sides the same length and 2 angles the same size.
We made patterns and pictures using ONLY ISOSCELES TRIANGLES.  Check them out!

Scrap bins and cross country

The scrap bins are new to the school.  The school is trying to get the old rubbish bins out of the concrete!  The cross country track is muddy!
By Kieran

We are collecting our scraps in yellow buckets to use for the school vege garden, the school worm farm, and to give to Millie's pigs!  We are trying to reduce our rubbish and use reusable containers in our lunches.  We are helping the environment!  Yay!!

Kiwiana

We are learning about kiwiana.  We had to ask our parents if they knew about two people.  Their names are Ches 'n' Dale.  They eat cheese, but now in NZ there are lots of cheese.  There is also a big L&P bottle in Paeroa and a big Kiwi, and a big gumboot in NZ.

Most of Room 14 had a buzzy bee when they were a baby.  We made a chart of everyone who had one.

The Cross Country

On the 30th April all the juniors went on the muddy cross country track for a practice run.  A lot of people fell over and got muddy.  4 weeks until it.  We're so excited about it.  All the kids are nervous.
Thanks for watching Room 14s blog.

Maths - Geometry

For Maths we are making isosceles triangles.  It has two edges that are the same length and one edge that is shorter.  It is a tall triangle.  We made dough and we put too much oil in it so it was very oily, and hot!  We made shapes with it.  We made 3 triangles - isosceles, right, and equilateral. Then we washed the oil off our hands!
